Grandma’s Top 5 Gazingus Pins

100_0503

A number of years ago, I read the book Your Money Or Your Life by Vicki Robin and Joe Dominquez.  The book is a real eye-opener about how much of our time we spend "earning a living".  I'd recommend your reading the book if you haven't already done so. One of my favorite terms from the book is Gazingus Pin.  You're probably wondering what a gazingus pin is. It's not a new jewelry item or a sewing notion.  I'd be willing to bet that every one of you who is reading this HAS a Gazingus Pin or two.  No way, you say? According to the authors, a gazingus pin is "any item that you just … [Read more...]

February Weather Musings

100_0640

I was recently doing some research about Leap Day, and I ran across this old proverb: "When the cat lies in the sun in February, she will creep behind the stove in March." This proverb was of interest to me since we just enjoyed one of the mildest Februarys ever here in Pennsylvania.  I've heard people issuing the same warning as this proverb. "We will pay for this mild February with a cold and wintry March,"  they say.  March is often a cold and snowy month here in the mideastern states, and if that's the case this year, I certainly won't be surprised.  I won't be blaming it on a … [Read more...]

This is a picture of our bathroom ... and these are words I never expected to type online. Now I'm going to tell you how to avoid having a stinky, dirty bathroom.  You have to clean it, and I recommend cleaning it every day.  Please keep in mind that I'm not talking about a spring-cleaning kind of clean here, but a clean that will allow your family and even guests to use your bathroom without risking your embarrassment or their comfort and safety. ;)   How to Clean Your Bathroom 1.  SWEEP THE FLOOR  Because my bathroom is the size of a small closet, I can use a small … [Read more...]

Passing the Frugal Torch

These are two of my favorite people in all the world!  This is my granddaughter Justine and her infant daughter. Justine is like a daughter to me since she lived with us from the time she was ten years old. I'm so proud of Justine for lots of reasons.  She's a young wife and mom, works full time, takes care of her home and her family, and is a smart and frugal shopper. This post was inspired by a story that Justine told me yesterday.  I'm going to relate her story to you here .... Justine needed to buy her baby some bottles with fast flow nipples.  The cheapest ones she could … [Read more...]

Veggies are Beautiful!

100_0604

We normally eat our main meal during the day with a lighter, easier-to-prepare dinner.  Last night we had egg sandwiches on 1/2 of a Light Original Flatout.  With our evening meal, we often have fresh veggies and dip. Last night's veggies looked so colorful and beautiful that I just had to share them with you.  This container holds grape tomatoes, cauliflower, broccoli, yellow and red pepper strips, and celery.  Because we restrict our carbohydrates, we don't include carrots, and we limit the tomatoes, too. I always serve the fresh veggies with dips.  Grandpa's favorite dip is … [Read more...]
