Yard Sale Finds and Tips

DSC00274

I don't go to yard sales as regularly as I used to mainly because I'm trying to avoid bringing more junk  stuff into our home.   My favorite kind of yard sale is a community sale with lots of families in one community offering their treasures at rock bottom prices. Last Saturday my sister and I decided to go to a community yard sale in the small town near us.  We had a great day and found some good deals! My deal of the day, however, was a Graco Pack 'N Play.  I found an older model last Saturday, and the owner wanted $5 for it.  When I hesitated for a moment, she immediately dropped … [Read more...]

Snake on the Table!

blog5

It was a normal Sunday like any other.  Grandpa and I arrived home from church,  and I went out back to light the gas grill.  I was at the grill with my lighter, when I discovered that I was not alone on the porch.  This charming fella was watching me from the table .... The snake was lying so still and had such a plastic appearance that I was totally convinced it was fake.  In my mind, I was already compiling a list of people who might have come to our house to plant the fake snake on our table while we were out.  When I got inside, I yelled for Grandpa, and he, too, thought it was … [Read more...]

Creating My Own Charging Station

DSC00229

Can you even believe how many devices in our homes have to be charged?  Kindles, razors, Dongles (yes, Grandma has a Dongle!), iPods, mp3 players, and even our vacuum cleaner all run on cordless power that needs to be recharged. I have been trying for several months to come up with a solution for the growing jumble of charging cords that we need to keep things running at our house.  At first I had all of our cords wrapped neatly and stored in a basket with a lid.  That created a problem, since I had to empty the basket every time I needed to charge something. The other problem was that I … [Read more...]

Low Carb Sweet Treat

DSC00206

If you are looking for a low carb sweet treat for summer, allow me to recommend our current favorite:  a root beer float. We use Breyer's Carb Smart vanilla ice cream and a store brand sugar free root beer to make a low carb treat that is cold and refreshing. The Carb Smart ice cream contains 4 grams of net carbs per half cup, but I use approximately 1/4 cup for our floats.  This ice cream is made with artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols, so it's not something in which you will want to overindulge.  Sugar alcohols can cause intestinal distress when consumed in large volume. For a … [Read more...]

Vet Expenses for a Dog: How Much Is Too Much?

DSC00212

This is Lila our high maintenance dog. I was thinking that it might be interesting to total all of the money that we've spent on Lila over the past six years, but then again, I'm not sure Grandpa or I really want to see that number. What has cost us so much, you ask? Naturally, we had Lila spayed as soon as she was old enough for that surgery.  She's had regular shots, regular doses of Frontline Plus, had an extra tooth removed, been treated for Lyme disease .... twice,  had her teeth cleaned under anesthesia, was attacked by a swarm of yellow jackets, had infections and … [Read more...]
