Best Ever Macaroni and Cheese Recipe

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This macaroni and cheese, in all of it's buttery, gooey, cheesy goodness is surprisingly easy to make. I first tasted this particular macaroni and cheese several years ago at an all day scrapbooking event at my church.  One of the other participants had made this macaroni and cheese recipe to share, and it was definitely the best mac & cheese I'd ever eaten. When I asked Bethany to share her recipe, she obliged, and I've been making it at home ever since.  That day at church, Bethany made her mac & cheese in a crock pot, and that's the way I've always done it, too.  I will say … [Read more...]

Pantry Challenge Wrap Up

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

WE DID IT!!!  We took the pantry challenge here at Grandma's house, and we met our goal.  During the month of February, we spent half of our usual grocery budget.  The funny thing is that I didn't seem to make a huge dent in our surplus. Check out these before and after shots of our pantry: I've done pantry challenges before, but because of reporting back to all of you, I was extra-motivated this time to make it a success.  Yesterday morning, I spent the last $8 of my allotted $200 grocery budget for February. If you are having a difficult time reigning in your grocery spending, then you might want to try a cash system for paying for groceries. I can personally attest to the fact that it is easy to overspend at the grocery store if I am paying with a debit card or credit card.  For the past ten years or so, I have been using cash to pay for our groceries.  While this system isn't foolproof, it has made me more diligent about keeping my grocery spending within our monthly budgeted amount. I like this system so much that I even have a special "grocery money" wallet that I use.  This wallet … [Read more...]

Ready for the Challenge!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The pantry challenge, that is! I spent some time last week cleaning out my pantry and defrosting my freezer in anticipation of using up my surplus during the month of February. I've got my pantry organized, and I know what's in there now. The freezer is clean, frost-free, and organized again, too. My freezer inventory is up-to-date. We are as ready as we can be for our February pantry challenge. My plan is to post a picture of our pantry and freezer at the end of next month so that we can see how much of our surplus we were able to use. It's going to be a real challenge … [Read more...]

Preparing for a Pantry Challenge

I'm gearing up for a Pantry Challenge in the month of February, and I'm going to tell you what that means here at Grandma's house! This is a shot of my pantry as it looks right now.  My pantry is really a coat closet that Grandpa turned into a pantry by adding shelves.  Because of the depth of the closet and the shelves, stuff gets pushed to the back and sometimes it gets buried back there.  You can see that sometimes things land in the pantry that are not even edible.  Like that Longaberger basket, for instance.  What is that doing in there? To prepare for next month's pantry … [Read more...]
