New Year’s Resolutions in 30 Seconds!

ID-10075101

This is typically one my favorite times of the year because I love the idea of a fresh start. This year, however, I was feeling less than enthused about formulating goals for the new year.  It has become apparent that I like making New Year's resolutions a lot better than I like keeping them. I was all set to skip the resolutions this year until a friend shared Coach Rick's method for setting goals for the new year.  I'd recommend trying this if you don't already have your New Year's Resolutions in place.  You'll need a timer, a pencil, and a piece of paper.  Keep in mind that a goal … [Read more...]

Let’s Eat at Home Tonight!

Let me be honest with you.  I like to go out to eat.  I like having a whole menu of choices.  I like not having to cook the food myself, and I especially like not having to do dishes when the meal is over. So why not just go out to eat every night?  Here are a few reasons why we don't do that: 1.  Restaurant food is expensive. Allow me to introduce our dogs, Mocha and Lila.  For the past eight years, Grandpa and I have been sharing our king size bed with these two.  But this week, that cozy arrangement came to an abrupt end. After Grandpa was recently diagnosed with Lyme disease, we talked about ways to decrease our chances of being bitten by disease-bearing ticks.  One of our ideas was to stop sleeping with dogs who are notorious tick magnets. That was Tuesday.  This is Thursday, and we have had scarcely more than five hours sleep since then.  We didn't expect them to LOVE this new arrangement, but we … [Read more...]

Support Your Local Farmer’s Market!

Here's what we bought last Tuesday.

Just because I don't like  to garden doesn't mean I don't like fresh seasonal produce.  In spite of what gardening enthusiasts will tell you, it is possible to enjoy locally grown produce AND avoid the sweat, bugs, dirt, and work that are involved in growning your own.  The easiest way to ensure a regular supply of fresh grown local produce is to visit the farmer's markets in your area.  If you don't know where to find a farmer's market in your area, take the time to find out.  You could do an online search for markets in your county, or ask people you know to point you in the right … [Read more...]

Grandpa’s Favorite Restaurant

Adhering to a particular eating plan can be a challenge when dining out.  As most of you know by now, Grandpa is a diabetic and manages his blood sugar by restricting carbohydrates in his diet.  Sometimes eating out is difficult for Grandpa because he feels like he can't order the foods that really sound good to him. That's not the case at Grandpa's favorite restaurant, Texas Roadhouse. One of the things that we like best about Texas Roadhouse is the peanuts on the tables.  This is an "appetizer" that Grandpa can enjoy guilt-free since peanuts are a relatively low carb snack … [Read more...]
