Springtime in the Country

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Nothing says springtime in the country like green grass, blossoming trees, and the fragrant smell of ...... an open septic tank. We live in a beautiful rural area, and sometimes people are envious of our location.  We love our country home, but I thought I should clear up any misconceptions that country life is all sunshine and flowers. Here at Grandma's house, we recently received a letter from our local township office informing us that it is time for an inspection of our septic system.  We are required to pay a $75 inspection fee every five years for the privilege of having our … [Read more...]

Plan Now for Financial Success in 2013

If you're looking ahead to 2013 and hoping for a better year financially, then the time to begin planning for that is now! This morning I had the privilege of sharing with the MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) group at my church.  I was invited to share about ways that I have learned to better manage my finances. I started out this morning by sharing the best financial advice Grandpa and I have ever received.   That financial advice has to do with avoiding debt, and one of the best ways to avoid debt is to have a plan in place to pay for irregular expenses. Waiting for Hurricane Sandy

It's not often that those of us in central Pennsylvania have to prepare for a tropical storm, but that's exactly what we have been doing this weekend.  People in these parts are talking of little else. We've done all we can do here at our house to make sure we are ready for whatever Sandy brings.  Our biggest threat here is wind that would result in loss of electricity.  Grandpa had been skeptical about the need for preparations, but with all of the reports on TV, he's gotten on board. We've got candles, flashlights, extra water, food, a wood stove, and kerosene lamps.   I've done … [Read more...]

Some of my favorite colors are the warm hues of autumn: apple red, pumpkin orange, goldenrod, and purple chrysanthemums.  While I can't compete with God's beautiful autumn displays outdoors, I still look forward to unpacking my fall decorations to use inside our house. The focal point in our living room is a six foot long custom- made oak shelf on the wall between our kitchen and living room.  This shelf is where I go a little crazy with decorative "clutter".  It's a perfect way to decorate because it's out of the way of our regular living space.  And I don't have to dust it until it's … [Read more...]

Our Recycling Bin

Because we at Grandma's house are totally on board with recycling, we needed a recycling bin.  Sadly, recycling is not mandatory where we live, but Grandpa and I choose to recycle anyway.  It's not that hard to do, so if you don't have curbside pick-up for recycling, that's no excuse! When we decided to recycle plastics, glass, and metal, we weren't exactly sure where to put them in our kitchen.  We tried keeping a can on the back porch, but I was usually too lazy busy to walk the whole waasaayyyy out back with my recyclables, and I would allow them to accumulate on the kitchen counter.  … [Read more...]
