My Pal Violet

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

When Aaliyah comes to visit, Violet almost always comes along. My Pal Violet is a cuddly purple puppy from Leap Frog, and Aaliyah loves her! What's so special about Violet?  Violet is a soft stuffed dog who does all kinds of amazing things.  The very best thing about Violet is that she can be customized to call a child by name. Justine hooked Violet up to her computer, followed the instructions, and now Violet calls Aaliyah by name and "knows" all of Aaliyah's favorite things.  It's so precious to hear Violet in her sweet voice say, "I love you, Aaliyah." Why I Didn’t Buy a Smart Phone

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I need a smart phone.  Seriously, I do.  And I can prove it. Last month, I committed to attending two meetings on the same night.  You know why I did that?  Because I don't have a smart phone.  It's true.  In November, when the committee was meeting in the pastor's study, all of the other participants entered the next meeting date into their smart phone calendar apps. Just a … [Read more...]

A Google Reader Review

A while back I posted about keeping track of blogs I follow by adding them to my favorites bar.  In the comments of that post one of my readers, a former student of mine, recommended that I try Google Reader for regular blog reading.  I hesitated to do so because I don't like setting up new things on the computer, but I was not completely satisfied with my method of organizing my favorite blogs. Finally, I decided to give Google Reader a try, and I'm so glad that I did.  If you're unfamiliar with Google Reader, it is like a holding tank for new posts from the blogs that you … [Read more...]

Noise Putty, a Dollar’s Worth of Fun

100_2339

I'd never seen nor heard of Noise Putty until I went on a shopping trip with my sister, and we stopped in a Dollar Tree store.  She advised me to pick up a few containers of this marvelously disgusting substance that was sure to delight children of all ages.  My sister has rarely ever steered me wrong, and she wasn't about to start now! I bought three containers of Noise Putty with the idea of trying one out myself and then giving one container to each of my great-granddaughters on Thanksgiving Day. If you're wondering what Noise Putty is, it's a kind of jelly-like substance that comes … [Read more...]

Those Incredible Shrinking Food Packages

100_2060

or "Honey, they shrunk the pumpkin can!" I am seriously fed up with this all too common practice food companies use to increase their profits by shrinking the packages of their products.  Those incredible shrinking food packages are one of my biggest pet peeves!  Who do they think they are actually fooling by charging the same price or more for a smaller package of food? I have a number of frequently used recipes that call for a certain size package of food. For instance, my macaroni salad recipe calls for a one pound box of macaroni.  Well, guess what.  It's hard to find a one … [Read more...]
